Finest Playa Mujeres: The All-Inclusive for People Who Don’t Do All-Inclusives

By Sarah  ·  January 2019  ·  Best for families with kids ages 3–7

Let me be honest with you. I don’t consider myself an “all-inclusive person.” I love a curated experience, a neighborhood to wander, somewhere unexpected to stumble into. The idea of being contained to one resort for a week used to feel like a punishment, not a vacation. And then I had two kids under five.

Suddenly the idea of one location, unlimited food, a kids club, and a pool with a waterslide sounded less like a compromise and more like paradise. The kid who decides they no longer love chicken nuggets after 5 years of eating them every day? No big deal — let me get you one of everything on the menu! Always having the room ready (and close by) for quiet wind-down time or a nap? Amazing. The secret to traveling with children and staying sane — and maybe sneaking in a few relaxing adult moments — is to adjust your expectations and plan a trip that meets everyone’s needs. Yes, I’ve done Europe with kids many times. That’s another thing altogether. This is actually relaxing.

So in January 2019, with a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old in tow, we headed to Finest Playa Mujeres — and I came home a convert.

Where is Playa Mujeres, exactly?

Playa Mujeres is a small, upscale residential and resort community located just north of Cancun — about 25 minutes from the airport. This matters more than you think when you’re traveling with small children. You’re not adding another exhausting hour to an already long travel day. You clear customs, pile into a private transfer, and soon you’re sipping a welcome drink before the kids fully realize the journey is over.

The location also keeps things quieter than the Cancun Hotel Zone. There’s no spring break chaos here. It feels intentional, calm, and a little exclusive — which is exactly the vibe Finest is going for.

The resort: small, stylish, and surprisingly manageable

Finest Playa Mujeres is not a sprawling mega-resort. This is one of its greatest strengths, especially with young kids. You’re not spending 15 minutes walking from your room to the beach. Everything is accessible, the layout makes sense, and after one day you know where everything is.

The design is modern and clean — white and neutral tones, glass railings, sleek outdoor furniture. It doesn’t try too hard. It’s the kind of place that feels elevated without being fussy, which is a hard balance to strike at an all-inclusive.

The staff absolutely adored our children. I cannot overstate this. From the moment we arrived, the team went out of their way to engage with the kids, remember their names, and make them feel special. This isn’t just good hospitality — it’s the difference between a relaxing vacation and a stressful one when you’re traveling with a toddler who has opinions. On the last day, when we were saying goodbye to the kids club staff, they actually gave my young daughter presents to take home. Barbies. I mean, come on.

The rooms: a game-changer for families

We stayed in a suite that had a separate kids’ area off the main room — essentially a little nook with twin beds tucked away from the master bedroom. I want to give whoever designed this a standing ovation.

Any parent knows that bedtime on vacation is a negotiation. When your kids are in a separate space, you can actually put them to bed at 7:30pm, close the door, pour a glass of wine, and sit on your terrace like adults. We did this every single night. It was revelatory.

Nap time with a view. This is the photo that tells you everything.

Our suite also had a rooftop terrace with a plunge pool — and this became our most-used amenity of the entire trip. While the kids napped, my husband and I would sneak upstairs with drinks and just… sit. Quietly. Looking at the ocean. It sounds simple but after years of small children it felt like the greatest luxury in the world.

“I want to give whoever designed the kids’ room a standing ovation. Bedtime on vacation is a negotiation — until it isn’t.”

The Finest Club upgrade: worth it?

We did the Finest Club upgrade, which runs approximately 20% more than the base rate. It gives you access to a separate pool and lounge area with premium drinks and enhanced service.

Honest take: you don’t need it. The regular resort is already excellent. But if you’re someone who appreciates the extras — and I am absolutely that person — you’ll enjoy having a slightly quieter retreat when the main pool gets busy. The premium drinks are noticeably better, and the lounge has a more relaxed energy. Think of it like business class. Coach gets you there just fine. But if the upgrade is available and you can swing it, you’ll be glad you did.

The food: better than you’d expect

All-inclusive food has a reputation, and Finest works hard to defy it. The standout? The taco and food truck station. Legitimately delicious. Fresh, flavorful, and the kind of thing you find yourself circling back to three times a day. If you go and you don’t spend significant time at the taco truck, I don’t know what to tell you.

The regular buffet and restaurants are solid — not transcendent, but consistently good. You won’t go to bed hungry and you won’t be disappointed.

One genuinely unexpected highlight: we were there during Super Bowl weekend, and Finest went all out. Massive outdoor screens, traditional Super Bowl snacks for the adults, obstacle courses and games for the kids. My husband and I declared it one of the best Super Bowl experiences of our lives — and we do love football. At an all-inclusive in Mexico. Nobody saw that coming.

For the kids: a genuine hit

Arms out. No fear. He went on this approximately 47 times.

The waterslide. I will let the photo speak for itself — my son, arms flung wide, flying down a massive Mayan-themed slide with pure unfiltered joy on his face. He went on it approximately 47 times.

The kids club was a genuine hit and gave us actual adult hours during the day — something I did not fully appreciate until it happened. Structured activities, attentive staff, and kids who came back happy and tired.

One honest note: the main kids pool area is located separately from the rest of the resort, and there’s no food or drink service nearby. This was our biggest frustration. When you’re managing little ones at a pool, the last thing you want is to pack up and trek across the resort every time someone is hungry or thirsty. We ended up going there less than we would have otherwise. Pack snacks.

The beach

White sand, calm water, thatched palapa umbrellas. Beautiful. There was some seaweed during our visit — this is common in the Cancun/Riviera Maya area and varies by season — but the water itself was a gorgeous clear Caribbean turquoise and perfectly calm for small children. Not rough, not choppy. Safe and swimmable.

The beach chairs and setup are lovely. It’s not crowded. It feels private even when it isn’t.

vs. Finest Punta CanaPlaya Mujeres wins — quieter location, better suite design
OverallThe all-inclusive that changed my mind about all-inclusives

Who is this resort for?

Perfect for:

Probably not right for:

How does it compare?

I’ve also stayed at Finest Punta Cana and Paradisus Grand Cana in the Dominican Republic. My honest ranking for families with young children:

Finest Playa Mujeres > Finest Punta Cana > Paradisus Grand Cana

Playa Mujeres wins for me on location — the quieter, more exclusive feel vs. the busier DR resorts — the rooftop suite design, and the overall polish of the experience.
